Gambling is an occupation or profession where someone places money on an uncertain outcome in the hope that the result of that outcome will win him or her money or material goods.
People can gamble on a whole host of events, from horse racing to a game of cards. Some forms of gambling are based on chance but other forms do include a certain amount of skill. Horse racing involves both skill and chance, a gambler might have read up on the breeding of a horse, its trainer and jockey and the horse’s form yet the outcome might still be uncertain, as the horse could injure itself during the race, thus negating a positive outcome.
Card games, including poker, also require both skill and luck. A poker player might be a superb strategist but if the cards that the player is dealt are not good or another player has been dealt better cards, even the most skilful of players might find it difficult to win the game.
Online gambling has grown over the last ten years and even more people are making use of the internet in an effort to win money. This global phenomenon means that at any time of the day or night someone, somewhere is logged on and gambling on either horses, dogs, cards, bingo or slot machines online. Some people also take advantage of the social aspects of online gambling, most of the major websites host forums where gamblers can chat to each other and compare notes.
