A Brief Guide to Online Sports Games

The popularity of online games that offer significant cash prizes is growing all the time.  There are now many websites that offer competitions and pay outs for the top players and many of them have minimal entry fees.  Some games are even free to enter and many of the competitions have big prize money available.  As a result, whilst there are hundreds of thousands of people who play for fun or just to try and beat their friends and family, there are a significant number who play for money.

Whilst football is probably the most popular sport that these online betting games focus on, there is a growing interest in other sports, such as cricket, rugby, tennis, golf and Formula One.  Generally speaking, these online sports game can be split into two types of competitions.

The first genre is the fantasy football type game and those that run over a long period of time.  In many instances, the biggest cash prizes are for the top players over the season, but there are usually numerous other prizes, such as manager of the week or manager of the month.

The second type of competition involves games where you have to predict a sequence of results.  These are either online football pools or a competition where you have to correctly predict 10 results across a weekend.  Prize money is usually smaller in these betting games, but you have a greater chance of winning something.

For those that are knowledgeable about a particular sport, the opportunity to play for money on these games can be hard to resist.

Useful Tips for Online Blackjack Players

The first tip to remember if you have never played online blackjack before is to find a casino that offers free demo games.  Most online casinos do and this is the best (and certainly cheapest) way to get to know the rules of that particular casino.  Sometimes the rules of online casinos are not very clear and it can be an expensive learning curve if you start playing with money immediately.

When selecting an online casino, choose one that is well known and has been in business for a couple of years.  You can be sure that by now any flaws with their website security systems would have been sorted out and that they provide solid support, otherwise they would not have been in business any more.

When you have played on the demo system for a while and you feel comfortable with switching to ‘live’ mode, try to take advantage of all the bonus offers you possibly can.  Having a thousand dollars to play with simply gives you twice the number of chances to win than having only your own five hundred dollars.

If you are really serious about the game, you can also get yourself a blackjack odds calculator.  This is a nifty toy that works out the odds for and against you in a particular game and helps you decide whether to hit or to sit.

Remember that in an ordinary blackjack game, you are only playing against the dealer, not against other players.  In tournament blackjack, this is of course different – then players are actually competing against each other.

Gambler’s Conceit

Gambler’s conceit is a theory put forward by an economist named David Ewing.  It describes the false belief, held by some gamblers, which emotionally justifies a continued losing streak.  Ewing claimed that gamblers believe they should continue playing through a losing streak, because they are convinced that they need to stop only when they are winning, in other words quit whilst they are ahead.  He went on to say that this desire was particularly irrational, because a losing gambler would have no desire to quit if they became successful.  They would therefore have no desire or rationale to quit under either circumstance.

There is another theory that motivates a losing gambler to continue playing, called ‘gambling fallacy’.  This is based the logic that bad luck must eventually end.  The truth of this would depend on what a gambler considers ‘bad luck’, although it should be remembered that casinos have a ‘house edge’, which means they are statistically likely to win more often and to win more money than their customers.  The fact that casinos have a house edge means that it is in their interest to keep a customer gambling, which is why the system of comps was devised.

Comps are complimentary items that are given to the gambler, free of charge, with the aim of persuading them to continue playing.  They can range from free drinks to hotel rooms or even air travel.  Comps are administered by specific casino employees whose job involves acting as host to high net worth gamblers, who they will treat as personal clients and even counsel and befriend.

Deciding Which Poker Variety to Play

With a number of varieties of poker available to play it can often be difficult to decide just which game should be learnt.  As a general rule the best variety is most likely Texas Hold’em due to its vast popularity around the world.  However, a number of differing situations could affect your preferred game.

It is important to decide whether you want to play poker online or in the real world as this may well affect the variety of poker you eventually settle on.  Each variety’s accessibility will be different across the world, with some casinos or online websites only offering specific forms of poker.  If you are looking to be able to play at any time of day and anywhere in the world choosing the commonest form of poker is probably the best move you can make.

However, previous experience may guide you towards a less popular form of poker.  Whilst Texas Hold’em is largely available and the most popular form of poker in the world, Omaha, a four-card game that originated in Europe, is growing in popularity.  Alternatively you may discover a website that you want to join which offers a slightly different form of poker.  Or perhaps a group of friends wants you to join their uncommon poker tournament.

Whilst there are a number of different poker types, there are also standardised rules for all of them.  Choosing your first poker variety to learn is important but always remember that once you have the basics down, swapping to a different game is relatively easy and simple to do.

What is a Casino?

Casinos are businesses that traditionally offer games, entertainment, food and beverages.  The most lucrative aspect of casinos has always been gambling and the other services often serve to encourage people to continue gambling.

Very often a casino will host two or three different types of gambling, such as slot machines, table games and bookmaking.  Slot machines, also known as ‘one-armed bandits’, are upright machines that a punter will put money into and pull a lever or press a button to start.  The machine usually has wheels on its face that will spin, and a punter will win if the wheels line up in a suitable combination.

Table games are usually a variety of card or dice games such as blackjack or craps.  Some table games are very popular and games such as poker have worldwide tournaments which are hosted in some of the world’s most exclusive casinos.  Bookmaking is a more recent addition to casinos as historically bookmaking was restricted to the side of horse racing and dog racing tracks.

The idea of casinos originated in Italy where large villas were used to host nights of entertainment and gambling as well as dancing and music recitals – the Italian word for house is ‘casa’, hence the term casino.  Modern casinos are very similar to their Italian origins as they have kept the gambling and entertainment although they are now often purpose-built.  Whilst the origin of casinos is known, nobody is sure about the origin of gambling although there is evidence that gambling was practiced in Rome, ancient Greece and ancient China.

Poker Hands Ranking System

The game of poker uses a standard hand ranking system.  Players create the best five card hand according to the specific rules of that particular variant.

The ace is the highest ranked individual card with 2 being the lowest.  The suit of each card determines whether there are any flush or straight flush possibilities during a hand.

The Royal Flush (A-K-Q-J-10 suited) is the absolute nuts, or best hand, in poker and cannot be beaten.  Immediately following in rank is the straight flush, which is comprised of lower suited runs.

Four of a kind, also known as quads, requires four cards of the same value.  The values determine rank when quad vs. quad.

The full House, or full boat, requires three cards of one rank and another paired rank.  For example, A-A-A-J-J is referred to as aces full of jacks.

The flush is made of five cards of the same suit.  They do not have to be in rank order.  If a both players have a flush, the player with the highest ranked flush card wins the pot.

A straight requires five cards of sequential rank.  In the event of straight vs. straight, the higher cards win.

A three of a kind, also commonly referred to as a set, hands are made up of three cards of the same rank.

Two pair occurs when a player makes two sets of matching ranked cards.  A single pair is a single math.

If no player makes a hand, the highest card takes the pot.

Slot Machines and How they Work

In the old days, slot machines were mechanical and they had actual spinning reels.  When you pulled the lever, the wheels spun and when they eventually stopped, you had a combination of images that meant either you won the bet or you lost your money.

As time went by, these machines became more complex.  Initially they had five spinning reels, but later on three became the industry standard.

In 1984, someone called Inge Telnaes designed an electronic number generator, which could be used in slot machines.  It quickly gained popularity and eventually all slot machines switched to what became known as Telnaes mapping.

With computerisation came a new generation of slot machines called video slots.  The big difference between them and the older type of machines is that they have no moving parts at all.  The spinning reels you see are just a computer projection.

The slot machine actually generates hundreds of random numbers per second, so your chances of hitting that one winning combination are actually quite small.  Modern video slot machines have now switched back to five reels, which gives them more different combinations.  The casino can therefore afford to offer a huge jackpot, since the chances of someone actually hitting it are one in millions.

Casinos
cannot just keep all the money that is wagered by players.  They are required by law to have certain minimum payouts.  This varies from country to country and even within a specific country, but it normally falls between 75% and 98%.

Bingo – a great way to play and meet new people

Bingo is a classic competition game dating from the early twentieth century.  Players use a game card with five rows and five columns, and a free space in the middle.

A desired pattern (most commonly a straight line) is pre-designated.  To make game play more interesting, other variations used are:
•    Christmas Tree
•    Kite
•    Picture Frame
•    Railroad Tracks
•    Clover Leaf
•    Blackout
•    No Matches/No Pattern

The choices are only limited by the game designer’s imagination.

Paired letter-numbers are randomly drawn and announced with varying degrees of fanfare; for example, “B-5”.  The letters spell out the word BINGO

The best and worst part of the game is when the first player to achieve the desired pattern shouts “Bingo!”  Usually a loud groan from all of the near-winners follows this announcement.

The win must then be verified by an official repeating all of the numbers and double-checking.

There is a variant of bingo with 15 columns and five rows.  In horse racing bingo, each player is assigned a column number (one through 15).  A player wins when all five of the numbers in their designated column are called.

Try playing the game in a dedicated bingo hall, with dozens of games per day.  Bingo halls require you to buy an admission packet, with a required minimum number of cards
Some of the many variations of bingo include:
•    Storm
•    Pick 8 Special
•    Pot of Gold
•    All-Star Special
•    Odd-Even

How to Play Roulette

Roulette is a random number game played on a roulette wheel.  Players wager bets on single numbers, colours and odd or even number outcomes.

There are numerous betting options available to roulette players.  Inside bets require a player to select an exact number or small pocket of numbers they believe the ball will land in.  Outside bets relate to betting on the whether the colour will be red or black, if it will be an even or odd number and larger scale pocket bets.  If successful, players will receive a payout based on probability.

Casino roulette tables often have a maximum and minimum bet limit.  These rules are applied to each individual bet, both on the inside and outside.  Players are allowed to place bets while the ball is spinning.  The dealer will announce ‘no more bets’ when the wagering period ends.  The dealer will then place a dolly, or marker, next to the winning number and colour when the ball his finished spinning.  Players are not permitted to wager bets, collect or remove bets from the table during this time.  The dealer will then clear the table of losing bets before paying out to the respective winners.  The dolly is then removed.

There are seven inside bets and six outside bets a player can make in roulette.  A street inside bet wagers on three numbers in a horizontal line.  Dozen bets, on the outside, wager on the ball landing in one of three bands of numbers.  For example, a player who has made a dozen bet on 1-12 will win if it lands on 7.

What is H.O.R.S.E.?

H.O.R.S.E. is a poker game that incorporates six different variants of the game.

The first round of H.O.R.S.E. is Texas Hold’em.  The dealer deals each player two hole cards and five community cards.  Players make their best five-card hand out of any combination of the seven cards.

Next is Omaha Hi/Lo.  This game is dealt in a similar fashion to Texas Hold’em with one exception: players are dealt four hole cards.  Players then make their best five-card hand out of two cards from their hand and three cards from the five-card community flop.

Razz, next, is a variant of seven card stud.  Players are dealt two hole cards, four cards up and then one more remaining card down.  The twist in this game is that the lowest hand takes the pot.

Seven Card Stud comes fourth during H.O.R.S.E.  Each player is dealt two cards face-down followed by four cards up and then the river card is dealt down.  Unlike razz, normal poker rules apply here and the best hand made with five cards wins.

The “E” in H.O.R.S.E. stands for Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo.  In this variant of Seven Card Stud, half the pot goes for the highest made hand and half goes to the player with the lowest hand.  The ideal situation is to have cards that could possibly take both the high and low to scoop the entire pot.

When playing a cash table, the H.O.R.S.E. rounds repeat.  During H.O.R.S.E. tournaments, however, final table play is decided over no-limit Hold’em.  H.O.R.S.E. is a popular variant for people who want to test their poker skill in its entirety.
