Spread Betting – What Is It?

Spread betting came into being in the 1940s and was developed by American mathematician Charles K. McNeil, who became a bookmaker in Chicago.  Spread betting was a way of increasing the chances for bets where the outcome was pretty much assured.

By giving a predetermined point score to the match, it evened up the odds for losing teams against certain winners.  Therefore if the match attracted a four point spread and during the game the losing side scored two, while the winners had five, the addition of the two plus four equals six points, so beating the winning teams 5 points.

Another side bet that is common within spread betting is the over/under bet where gamblers place a bet on whether the score will be higher or lower than a predetermined amount. In the UK this is often placed against the number of corners in a football match. The bookmaker will estimate the possible number of combined corners by the teams before the gamblers place their bets.

For example:

The bookmaker believes there will be 13 corners in a game; gamblers then place bets on whether they believe there will be less or more. So if there are eventually 16 corners, the gamblers who estimated higher, will win at 16–13=3 times their original bet. Likewise if there are only 10 corners the gambler betting on higher will lose at 13-10=3 times their original bet.

The brilliance of spread betting is it can be applied to any sport, on virtually any variable and in turn increases the sports fans interest and chances of winning.

Bingo Variations

Bingo is played around the world, but the cards and rules are slightly different, depending on where you are.  In the USA, cards typically include five cells across and five cells down, a total of 25.  The centre cell is ‘free’ and does not require a number.  While bingo was historically called when a player completed a vertical line beneath one of the five bingo letters, other patterns are often played in bingo halls.  The pattern is announced in advance, so players may cross out the squares that are not to be used.

In the UK, the bingo cards typically have twenty-seven squares; nine columns by three rows is the usual arrangement.  Each horizontal row of nine cells has five numbers printed on it and there is no ‘free’ cell.  Numbers are chosen at random, either via a random number generating machine or by selecting balls from a mechanical draw machine.  Occasionally, a bag of counters is used and the caller selects one from the bag.  The number is called out and play proceeds until a player calls out that he or she has completed one or more rows. 

Play can be for one line of the ticket, two lines of the ticket or for all the numbers printed on the ticket.  The last combination is the most difficult and is typically called a ‘Full House’.  Because of its difficulty, when playing for cash this is the combination that pays out the most money to the winner.

While the game of bingo varies slightly around the world, one thing remains the same; the amount of fun people have playing it.
