Blackjack basics: tips to winning the game

Blackjack is one of the most popular games to play at a casino, and is more popular than poker especially for those who are new to card games.  Blackjack is a relatively easy game to understand the basics of, and by following a few tips can help move the odds more in the player’s favour.  However, a player needs to keep in mind; odds are always in favour of the house.

Basic strategy

The basic strategy will always depend on the first cards that are dealt.  If the player has 17 or above, this will dictate that the player is best to stand, but if they having a total of five or eight it would be best to hit.  There are a vast number of different scenarios that need to be taken into consideration; for example, if the dealer is showing any card and the player has a total of 11 then they should always double.  Most of the time, if a player is dealt a pair they should split the cards into two hands, depending on what the dealer then shows.  The player should only stick with a pair of 10s, while a pair of fives should be doubled.

No matter what card the dealer is showing there will always be occasions when the outcome will go against the basic strategy.  Players will not always win, but it is helpful to have a guide as to the best actions for any given scenario.  Many casinos will allow the use of a basic strategy card that is widely available, though it is expected that the player understands the basics before beginning a game.

Omaha Poker – The Basics

Second only to Texas Hold’em, the poker variety of Omaha is continuing to increase in popularity around the world. With very similar rules to its Texas Hold’em counterpart, you will find that the rules are very easy to learn. But as with all games, it is a good idea to understand the basic rules before diving in.

Omaha is a community flop poker game which can involve between two and ten players.  Winning is accomplished by either moving through each round until all other players fold, or by showing a hand at the showdown which tops any of the remaining players in the game.  At this point all chips on the table are yours for the taking.

There are four rounds in Omaha, with the one before the community cards are revealed called the pre-flop, and the remaining three rounds known as the post-flop.  To successfully win a game you must stay in the game throughout all rounds which have another player, raising or calling as time progresses.  You may fold in any round, though you will leave the game, losing any stakes that you may have already entered.  In each round individual players make their moves one by one, taking into account the community cards which are revealed at the end of the first turn around the table.  A winning hand consists of two dealt cards and three community cards, making it vital to always keep a close eye on the table’s revealed cards.  And by grasping the basics early on you can ensure that your Omaha game is as credible as possible.

How to Play Pai Gow

Pai Gow is an old Chinese game that was originally played with dominoes.  The game was moved from dominoes to playing cards and a simplified version of Pai Gow was created.  This new version of the game quickly spread and became very popular in gambling arenas.  It was not until the 1980s that the game became official and rules were formed and recorded.

Despite the exotic sounding name, Pai Gow is very simple to learn.  It is played with a standard deck of playing cards plus one joker.  The joker plays an important role as an additional ace as well as being wild if the player is holding a straight or flush.

Each player is dealt seven cards and the received cards need to be split into two distinct hands; a two and a five card hand.  The one rule regarding this is that the five hand selection must be stronger than the two card hand otherwise the player will automatically lose.

The dealer will also have seven cards and the aim of the casino version is to have better ranking hands than the dealer.  Winning a hand will occur when both hands beat the dealer whereas only one winning hand results in a tie, and if neither hand beats the dealer then the player loses.

Hand rankings in Pai Gow are similar to normal poker but, with the addition of the joker, the best hand would be five aces, consisting of the four deck aces plus the joker.  With the two card hand ranking the best hand is a pair of aces followed by single cards.

Different Variations of Slot Games

There are hundreds of different slot machine games available, from the traditional pub machine to the online casino.  Though most have their own distinct theme, there are many that play similarly to other well-known casino games like Blackjack, Roulette and Poker.

In any casino around the world, in one section of the gaming floor there will be hundreds of different slot machines all flashing and beeping.  From the triple reel to five reels, they are all simple to play.  Most of these types of slot machines will have the option of multiple win lines depending how many coins per spin are inserted.  At many casinos there is a progressive jackpot, which is a bank of slot machines linked together that incorporates an overall running total to be won.

Video slots are a new variety of machine that is becoming more common in casinos. They offer a similar game to standard machines but, due to the game being played on a screen instead of having mechanical parts, there are no limits to the theme.  From ‘Deal or No Deal’ to ‘James Bond’, there are endless choices of games available on a video slot machine.

Slot games are becoming more complex as well thanks to the computerisation of the systems used to create the new generations of slot machines plus, having the full video display means there is no restriction to the visual effects which can be seen by the player.

Bingo Tips – Online Bingo Chat

Surprisingly, online bingo actually allows for more social contact than live bingo. When held in a bingo hall the game is generally played in silence, so as to make sure players can hear all of the numbers called, allowing them to concentrate on marking off their numbers across multiple tickets.

However, in online bingo games, most of the action is automated thanks to the smart software that is used to power the games, thus freeing players to utilise the chat function. Players are then able to take full advantage of the chat boxes to play Xbingo games and converse with fellow players.

The chat rooms attached to online bingo games are run by people known as chat hosts or chat moderators. Their role is to make sure that all the players have fun, to congratulate winners and to facilitate chats by running quizzes. Chat hosts also have the power to either hand out free bingo games to players who have a bad run and quiz winners. The hosts also play a major role in running themed chats, where certain bingo rooms will have chats on a specific theme at a certain time.

Popular themes that are run in the chat rooms attached to online bingo games include ‘Happy Hour’ games, where the chat is generally light hearted and scheduled for early evening when players are returning from work.

Baccarat Gambling

Baccarat is a card game that is popular in modern casinos.  The game is purely based on chance and does not involve any form of strategy.  It is a very simple game to learn, and is a favourite amongst high rollers. This is due to casino regulations on high minimum bets.  The card game revolves around comparing cards between the player and the dealer.

How to Play Baccarat

There are three common variants of the game, with Punto banco being the most popular.  In Punto banco, two hands are dealt, punto and banco.  During a turn, the player places a bet on which hand they think will win, or if they think there will be a tie.  If either hand has a total of eight or nine, no more cards will be dealt.  This is referred to as a natural.  If a natural is not dealt, the dealer may deal a third card.

The payouts in baccarat are relative to probability.  Since there is a 50 per cent chance of winning when the player bets on either punto or banco the payout will be 1:1. For a tie, the payout is much higher at either 8:1 or 9:1.

Playing Baccarat Online

Most online casinos offer baccarat with the option to place a much lower minimum bet than if you were in a real casino.  Most new players will test the game online for this very reason.  The only major difference is that the cards are dealt electronically.  Like other casino games the player is able to download software so they can try out the game with “ghost money” before they decide to bet with real cash.

Poker – A History

The game of poker is played worldwide by young and old. Poker tournaments have a widespread following, and world class players are now afforded rock-star treatment on tours. But where did this popularity originate from, and how has the game developed over the years?

The modern day game has its roots in the 16th Century game ‘Primero’. In addition, historians note influences from the Persian game ‘Ad Nas’, and the English ‘Three-Card Brag’, of around the same era.

The advent of immigration to the Americas from Europe, Asia and further afield meant that these games spread, and by the 1800s poker as it is recognised today was being played in the region of the Mississippi Delta.

The game was played with increasing frequency on riverboats along the Mississippi, and with the advent of the gold rush and subsequent expansion of the US frontier, the game spread north and west, soon becoming a part of pioneer life.

The American Civil War saw the game played amongst soldiers, spreading further throughout the country. In this era, the game also saw further game play developments, such as the introduction of stud poker and the straight hand type.

At the turn of the 20th Century, poker had begun to spread globally, and by the 1970s, the first World Series tournaments had begun. Poker was depicted frequently throughout various media from the 1960’s onwards as a recreational activity, and its popularity increased, boosted once again in the late 1990’s through online poker rooms, and televised tournaments with hole cameras that allow spectators to view all aspects of the game unrestrained.

The Difference Between Virtual and Real Slot Machines

It is important to understand the similarities and differences between playing slots at a brick and mortar casino and playing online slots. Slot machines at brick and mortar casinos have a lower pay out rate than online slots. This means that you will win more often when you play online.

The first thing that you want to remember is that slot machines are a game of pure chance. There are two main ways to improve your odds; research and betting. Each slot machine has a different pay out rate that averages between 92 and in some cases 98 or 99 per cent. Do an internet search and read reviews of the different online slots before deciding where you would like to play.

Once you have made the decision it is important to get used to the game and get well acquainted with the betting rules. Many games will offer an advantage to players placing the maximum bid on a spin. This means that the pay out is a higher percentage. For example, a one coin bet may pay £100, a two coin bet £200, but a three coin bet can be £500.

Online casinos also offer players bonuses. These vary from casino to casino. It is important when you choose an online casino to read all of the information available to you, instructions, and terms and conditions to make sure that you have the best experience possible.

The History of Playing Cards

The Chinese lay claim to many inventions ranging from pasta to gunpowder, porcelain, and printing.  They also invented one of the most important tools in gambling – the playing card.

The first evidence of playing cards is from the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 AD).  These “money cards” have four “suits” represented by ideograms; coins, myriads of coins, strings of coins and tens of myriads.  It has been suggested that these cards served as both money and playing cards.  Soon, because humanity seems to have always loved gambling and games of chance, these playing cards spread across Asia and along the trade routes to the Middle East.  In Egypt, the suits in the “Mameluke” 52 card deck were very similar to the swords, staves, cups, and coins seen on Italian cards of the late 14th century.  These suits had 10 spot cards with pips, and 3 “court” cards; king, viceroy, under-deputy.  As Egypt was an Islamic nation, the Mameluke designs were abstract.

Playing cards spread rapidly across Europe, along with gambling games, and by 1393 the French court was having decks of cards made.  By 1418 professional card makers, using woodcuts for printing, had established themselves in Nuremburg, the ancient home of toy manufacture.

The fifteenth century saw the establishment of cards as we know them today, with the French court designating the suits – spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs – and renaming the face cards in line with royalty; king, queen and knave.  The ace slowly developed as a special card until, during the French Revolution, “aces high” games became common.  In the final expansion, French settlers took their cards to the New World.
