Historians have found evidence of gambling in the earliest societies. Evidently, gambling in different forms has been used as an integral part of a society’s entertainment for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of gambling comes from China in around 2300 B.C.
Most games played in casinos today, owe their origins to gambling games dating back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The origin of many aspects of gambling, including rules and objects used for gambling, such as dice, emanated from China.
Gambling in all probability has religious origins. Religious leaders and holy men probably performed rituals that were used to predict the future. They used to throw down objects and their answer was determined by the way that the objects fell, whether it was to do with the shape or the number of objects. This was called ‘casting lots’ and was the precursor to throwing dice.
In due course, devotees began to think that there may be divine intervention involved in the result of casting lots, and the gods would be offered gifts in order to somehow influence the outcome. This led to people placing bets, effectively gambling on the result.
